Damn, and I used to have this book. John Perry had special editions made for his classes since as you discovered, the original edition is very expensive. Having taken his class based on the book, and seen the book itself, I can tell you that its mostly a regular data structures book, although made specifically for C. So you won't be exploring esoteric data structures, but ones very common to C -- arrays, multidimensional arrays, stacks, queues, linked lists. The chapters on string handling are nice because they help you get an intuition for how strings work in C, but this is one you can easily do yourself by writing a couple of string manipulation programs. Looks like, from the description, it's a data structures and algorithms textbook that uses bitwise operators and the C Standard Library. If you can't get ahold of a copy, I would suggest getting a data structures/algorithms textbook with lots of exercises in it and working through those. I spent my college years looking for that magical book that would reveal the secrets of C and C++ to me, but as it turns out, continually working on the basics and building things is what helped me land my first job.
